The Club's purpose was the promotion of Bohemian culture in America by encouraging the use of the Bohemian language and art forms such as literature, song, and dance. The Club was an active supporter of the American Red Cross during World War I. It was dissolved in the 1930s due to declining membership. The collection consists of constitutions (1927-1928), general minutes (1912-1928), Executive Committee minutes (1929), correspondence (1927-1932 and undated), membership information (1926-1932), financial material (1930-1933), and miscellaneous documents including song lyrics and club stationery. Its early members served in the Union army during the American Civil War. Initially, benefits were paid to dependents of men killed in the war. The first Cleveland, Ohio, branch was the third branch of the national organization, and by 1919, 23 branches were located in the city. The national organization was headed by a supreme lodge which had 11 Grand Lodges beneath it. Cleveland was the seat of the Ohio Grand Lodge, which at one point had 31 individual lodges with 3,400 members under its charge. The Czecho-Slavonic Benevolent Society minute book, 1882-1893, consists of a single volume of the Ohio Grand Lodge. The family was very active in Cleveland's Czech societies, including Lumir-Hlahol-Tyl, Sokol Tyrs, Nationalities Services Center, and others. Victor was married to Marus Hlavacek Ptak. The collection consists of a small amount of correspondence, clippings and memorabilia. The organizational records form the bulk of the collection and consist of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, agendas, memoranda, financial records, bulletins and printed materials. Lumir (est. 1867) and Hlahol (est. 1896) were choral societies which merged in 1918 as Lumir-Hlahol. They were joined by the Tyl dramatic society, which was founded in 1881 and called Budivoj until 1903.
